About Us
The Church
History: Our congregation was established in 1672 by a group of like-minded protestants in Ropemakers Alley. It has a long history (available in the Bancroft archives) with many dissenters being imprisoned for their freedom of worship. The first chapel building was in Solebay Street in the 1800’s and was demolished by a bomb during World War II. After this, the church was given land in Ernest Street where the current building was erected, the foundation stone being laid in 1951. The new site was just across the road from where the church’s mission once stood (the first Ragged School was also run from here by the church until it moved to Copperfield Road). The church hall was finished in 1953, and the Manse was added in the 1970’s.
